Sunrise at the sea

by Ba Jin

In order to watch the sunrise, I often get up very early, when it is still not completely bright, and the surrounding is quiet except for the humming of the motors.

The sky is in light blue, a very pale color of blue. All of a sudden, a streak of red cloud emerges at the edge of the sky and slowly grows and brightens. Knowing that the sun is about to rise from the horizon, I start to gaze at it.

Just as expected, shortly, the sun starts reveal a small part of its face. It is really red, but does not have much light. It seems the sun is heavily burdened, painstakingly climbs up. Finally, it breaks out from the clouds, jumping from the sea surface, into a lovely red color. Within a split second, eye-dazzling light radiates from this deep red sphere and stings my eyes. The surrounding clouds also glow with a red sheen.

Sometimes the sun is covered by the clouds, but its radiation still shoots down, reflecting on the water surface. At that moment, it is not easy to make out where the sea ends and the sky begins, for all I can see is an eyeful of glittering light.

Sometimes there are dark clouds in the sky. When the clouds are thick, the human eye cannot see that the sun has already risen. However, the light will break out from the block of dark clouds, adding a gilt edge to them. After a while, the sun will slowly break away from the clouds, showing itself in the sky and dyeing the dark clouds into either purple or red. In time, not only the sun, the clouds and the sea, but I myself also shine.

Isn’t it a spectacular wonder?
